CHLOE

“You’re awfully distracted,” Harper accuses from the opposite side of the booth at Jack’s Bar and Grill. I asked my bestie to meet me for dinner so I could go over my interior decorating plans for Maya Grant. Though I designed the nursery for my cousin, I’ve never designed a five-year-old kid’s room before. Because Harper is the oldest of many siblings, I’m certain she can give me an honest critique before I present my plans to Maya.

“Distracted?” I repeat, reaching for my cup. But it’s empty aside from a few nearly melted ice cubes. I set it at the edge of the table, all the while feeling Harper’s suspicious gaze studying me for clues. “What do you mean?”

“I mean you can’t even get a full sentence out about your design without trailing off into la-la-land. What gives, Chloe?” Her tone is a mixture of concerned and annoyed. We’ve always told each other everything. But I’m afraid to tell her about Wade, mostly because what we’re doing is already risky enough. The last thing I want to be responsible for is getting him fired because I shared our secret.

“It’s a long story,” I say dismissively as the server takes our empty glasses and promises to bring refills.

“Have somewhere to be tonight?”

My cheeks heat of their own accord. Though I won’t be meeting Wade for several hours yet—not until midnight—I do have somewhere to be. Somewhere I’m both thrilled and terrified to be. Especially after what Wade said in the stable about belonging to him forever.

“You do!” Harper’s eyes double in size. “Chloe Barnes, I can’t believe you’ve been keeping secrets. Spill it now, or I swear I’ll dig up the truth on my own. We both know you won’t like that very much.”

I can’t argue that. Harper is anything but discreet. If she figured out I was hooking up with Wade on her own, there’d be no keeping it a secret after that. She would never intentionally cause trouble, but it has a way of finding her. I can’t risk it. “Fine, I’ll tell you. But you’re sworn to secrecy.”

“Do we need to do a blood oath?” She digs into her purse until she pulls out a pocket knife. “I’m totally prepared to—”

“Put that thing away before you poke your eye out,” I hiss.

“Fine.” She closes the knife and shoves it back in her purse seconds before our refilled drinks arrive. The server is new to town, and I’m not sure she would know what to do with Harper wielding a knife. No need to give anyone an unnecessary panic attack. “Start talking.”

As much as I’m afraid to share my secret, I’m also relieved to get some advice. Harper is brutally honest, and if she thinks I’m going to make a big mistake, she’ll tell me straight up. “You can’t tell anyone.”

“Already established that,” Harper says impatiently. “Unless we’re slicing open our palms, move on.”

After a deep breath for courage, I tell her all about the ex-convict working at Daisy Hills Creek Ranch.
